Bricklaying & Repointing

Repointing v Rendering

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.53 PM

I have an outbuilding which was previously a workshop and has been converted for residential use. One of the walls needs some repointing, which is expensive. Would rendering be an option, or would the brickwork need repointing prior to rendering anyway? If rendering is an option, would this be cheaper?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

No you do not need to point prior to rendering any holes or cracks will help to key the render to the structure.

Rendering will give you a more waterproof solution but not always the best. If it has been converted properly it will be a double skin wall and insulated in which case repointing will as good a remedy. Personally i would always rather retain the natural brickwork unless beyond pointing due to spalling of the bricks.

Hi. Personally I agree with Stephen, when at all possible maintain the brickwork, in my experience pointing would be cheaper if done correctly, Many thanks john

Hi, if his a new converted wall the rendering is not the best option honestly. A nice Repointing will be great with the existing bricks and seem better to the eye having bricks exposed. Thanks Bruno

I have put my hand to rendering quite a lot in my past and as a bricklayer now I would say you should have no problem once the building has been rendered the mortar holes will just help to key the render better in place and the render will give much more waterproofing then a mortar point could
