Fine crack across bedroom ceiling in Edwardian property
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.12 PM
Hi We had the bedroom ceiling in our edwardian property skimmed over a year ago as part of our renovations as there were previously polystyrene tiles on it. Once removed there were multiple cracks in the ceiling but none large and no bowing etc. As there was original coving we asked our tradesman to just re-skim rather than board and skim which is what we did in all other rooms. A week or so after the job one of the cracks we'd noticed pre- re-skim reappeared. The others didn't and we also haven't had any cracks appear in the other ceilings that have been boarded first. The crack has been there for over a year now unchanged and all friends/family who have seen it say it's just the way with an older property. It's a hairline crack, not a big one. However I am a little worried that it could be indicative of the ceiling being a bit unstable as it stretches all the way across from one end of the room to the other including into the coving. My newborn daughter is now sleeping with us in that room so I'm worrying myself that one day the ceiling might just come down!! would value advice as to whether this is likely to be indicative of a structural issue or just cosmetic. I am certain the tradesmen didn't do anything to 'prepare' the ceiling and try and prevent recurring cracks. We weren't impressed with any of the work they did, there were alot of shortcuts taken.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
