Central Heating

Noise coming from the pipes around the boiler / air in central heating system

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.12 PM

I have a Potterton Profile boiler and Honeywell thermostat, with an open central heating system (f&e tank in the loft). I recently drained down the system to install a new heated towel rail in the bathroom. I have refilled (with inhibitor) and bled all the rads as it was filling, including the new installation. Everything is working, all rads heat up but there is noise coming from the pipes around the boiler like trapped air. I have taken time to bleed all the rads periodically and there is lots of air coming out each time but I can't seem to stop the terrible noise around the boiler. Is it a case of just bleeding rads until all the air is released and hopefully (the noise) or should I have done something else to push out all the air. Is there a bleed valve on or around the boiler? Do I need to balance the rads / how do I do this. Thanks for your help in advance.

If all rads are still letting air out leave till all air is released then should be ok inhibitor should be drained back out after couple of weeks

Noise in the pipework could possibly be solder knocking around through the system

Check to see if there is a air vent on the flow or return pipework in the cylinder cupboard. Hopefully this will solve your issue. Then go around the heating system bleeding the rads on the ground floor first. Any towel rads on the system should be the last one's to bleed. Add inhibitor to the system trough the F&E tank in the loft. One bottle of inhibitor is good for 5 rads. Depending on how many rads you have. Good luck.
