New radiator in garage conversion run off radiator above it not hot

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.53 PM

Hi there, We've had a radiator put into a garage conversion. It has been run off the radiator above it, which the plumber tells us is on a 'one pipe system'. All the radiators in the house, including the one the new one's been run off are red hot, but the new radiator is stone cold. We do know the new radiator is full of water because we have turned the key and cold water came out. We think we have checked the valve on the radiator and is all ok. We also have a relatively new combI boiler (3 months old) which is working well and the water pressure is fine. Any idea what the problem and solution is?? Because we have a plumber who is very hard to get hold of. He doesn't return calls let alone come back. Thanks

It's certainly worth replacing your plumber. They can be hard to get hold of sometimes, but that's no good to you when you're cold! A new one usually does the trick! If the system you've extended is a one pipe system, then the new rad will need to be plumbed in differently. Try closing off the valves on the upper radiator (clockwise all the way) and see if that makes a difference. Make sure the valves on the lower rad are fully on (anti-clockwise all the way). If the rad then gets hot, open one valve on the upper rad fully (the TRV if there is one) and the other one just half a turn. There should be no need to close off the lower rad valves unless you lose heat in other parts of the house, which is unlikely. Remember (my apprentice is a pain for it) clock wise shuts the valve and anti-clockwise opens it.

Try turning off every other rad via the valves, see if new rad heats up, if it does it is then a case of balancing the system, if it doesn't you seem to have a blockage.
