Plumbing

plumbing challenge - 100pts to anyone who can solve this one

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.34 PM

Heres the deal. I'm Mr Lamen and struggling to contend with my plumber's technological spiel. I Got a Baxi Combi 33, 4 bedroomed house, 2 showers, about 14 radiators. No real issues with it apart from slight loss of pressure when both showers are on - but no big deal. We are about to break thru in to our extension which is at the far side of the house (& far side of gas mains box). The extension is a masterbedroom with ensuite (another shower!). We are also installing a gas fire and have a part gas cooker. All in all we are exceeding the 70KW domestic rule (this make sense anyone?) and theoretically drawing 74KW. Now, my prime specification is to extend the radiator system in the new bedroom as the house is so well insulated we dont seem to struggle in getting warm - but how to deal with the shower - Vented, un-vented, water storage immersion I'm lost.. I am sure the Baxi wont take another shower cos of pressure loss. We also intend eventually installing a woodburner at grd floor level under the ensuite more or less and wonder if i go for a back boiler if there is way of making use of that heat for something. maybe I heat the new bedroom in that way sometimes and other times off the main boiler?? Anyway any advice most welcome thanks JB

What I can tell you is this, I doubt very much your gas pipe is up to standards, I would imagine you get way more than the allowed 1mb drop in working pressure. Adding more to the system is gonna hurt it. Engineer should be isolating all appliances that are affected by the drop in pressure. If he doesn't he is risking your life, they are not working correctly with the wrong gas pressures.

I'd go for a decent Electric shower in the new en suite, 8.5kw + as you'll always struggle using multiple showers at once, especially a third and besides that, you will waste a lot of water waiting for the hot to come through from the boiler
