Alteration to steel beams

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.53 PM

Hi, Can you please hep me with a troublesome part of my build. Due to a very bad experience with a building firm I have been forced to project manage my extension (2 storey rear) myself and come to grips with a lot of things that I haven't previously encountered! Despite having a site survey, I have a couple of beams that require alteration. One of these alterations requires a set of beams to have connection plates welded to them and the same needs to be done on the beams awaiting on the other end where they will be bolted. A local welder has advised that he can fillet weld which should be sufficient. Is this type of alteration permissible and atypical? Also, the beams going across will be 30mm in line with the beam described on the other end and the rest of it will be above this beam. However, the connection plate being welded to the "receiving" beam will start from the base of the beam and go around 200mm above this beam. Additionally it will have additional supports added to it. The beams coming across will then bolt into this plate. Hope that makes sense and would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks in advance.

Hi sorry to hear you had trouble with builders .The builders you have now are they not able to advise you on this ? Do you have structural plans for this work if so your builders should be able to sort this for you.Give your local building control a call they will be able to help you. But I would question your builders ability
