Chimney & Fireplace

we recently had a multi fuel burner fitted chimney breast upstairs very hot.

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.08 PM

We recently had a multi fuel burner fitted into where originally we had an open fire. It was proffesionaly installed with liner and insulation stuff back filled. Its makes our house which is approx 100yrs old toasty. But we have just discovered that the wardrobe which stands against the chimney breast upstairs is baking hot now im not sure if it should get this hot as it didn't with an open fire. But we have had the burner in use all day with logs and night smokless fuel coal. So the heat has had a chance to build up. Is this safe and normal should or should we move the wardrobes to let the air circulate around the chimney breast? Please help as im to scared to light the burner now incase the wardrobe and clothes catch fire.

Providing that you have had the correct flue liner installed, The 316 liners and 904 liner are tested the 450 and 600 degrees. 316 liners are guaranteed for 15 years and 904 liners are guaranteed for 25-30 years. Because you have had vermiculite insulation applied, this will allow the breast to become hot. I would recommend that the installation is safe providing the correct liner was used. If you do have concerns call a Hetas installer and may have to move the wardrobe away from the chimney breast. I hope you have a HETAS certificate of competence provided with the installation. Hetas installers should always have £2 million public liability insurance. Your Hetas installer should be called back to check the installation.

The flue may be breached, have a smoke test carried out

I would have the Chimney checked with a smoke test to ensure you are not getting any fumes into the room, other than this i would leave a small gap at the back of the wardrobe, but this is a normal that the brick work will heat up.
