Fixed or temporary installation - fix a surface mount socket to a wall

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.12 PM

Could you tell me please if it is acceptable practice, to fix a surface mount socket to a wall connected with a flexible cable with a plug on the other end. The plug then connects into an existing socket.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

This is in effect considered to be an extension lead (albeit fixed to the wall), whilst the regulations doe not specifically preclude the use of flexible cables and what your suggesting, it is considered by professionals as "Poor Installation practice" and as such should be avoided. - A better solution would be to run surface mounted mini trunking to the new socket and use 2.5mm solid T&E cable. REMEMBER that if you are doing this work as DIY, you need to apply for Part P building regulation consent (all DIY electrical work now comes under this) - you can download the forms from your local council website and should expect to pay about £250-£300 for the application. Once consent has been granted you can then do the work, but its probably far cheaper and quicker to hire a part P registered electrician to install a new socket for you insted.

Hi Richard, no that is not acceptable, if there is already a socket near enough for you to do that you may as well get an electrician to put in an additional socket. Regards, Ben ICO Electrical

For what it would cost why not have it done properly!
