Preparation of varnished woodwork
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.12 PM
We have a varnished wood hallway including 8 doors and staircase with detailed molding. We would like to update with fresh paint. So question is do we have to sand back to wood (bearing in mind the molding details) or can we prime with Zinsser and move onto the topcoat, and would you recommend gloss or satin for longer lasting effect ? Any advice would be welcome please.

With good prep it will be fine , no need to go all the way back to wood as long as its keyed so paint can stick, I would recommend, primer undercoat and then undercoat and gloss or 2 coats of eggshell whichever you prefer

Best way to get rid of Varnish is to take the 'R" out if it... Vanish
