Excavating end of garden for driveway - Help on approach

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.08 PM

Hi. Looking for some advice on the best way to achieve what we want. We have a property with no off street parking. The end of the garden backs onto a road so we want to excavate this and build the driveway. Its a Victorian property and has walls for the garden boundaries. The garden is also approx 5ft higher than the road at the back. So we would need to dig out the earth for the driveway area, then build a U shape retaining wall to hold back ours and the neighbour's gardens including the garden wall. Then build steps up to the garden and block pave the drive. Does this seem like the best way to achieve the driveway? The problem is the cost of building the retaining wall as it have to have very deep foundations and be several bricks thick to hold back the weight of the gardens Thanks

You should really get someone out to view this before taking any advice from someone that hasn't seen the job as it may look completely different to how you describe it . There may be an easier option for example but any contractor would need to see the job before giving advice. Hope this helps thanks

the problem you could face is the services under the ground, i.e water, gas and sewage pipes you need to find out where the mains run before digging to this depth that you are decribing, look out for the positions of the meters the pipes beneath usually run from there to the road, if in any doubt you should contact the relevent service providers and seek advice as to safe digging depths, definately dig down by hand first before putting a machine on there, other than that your idea would work also dont forget your drainage to comply with SUDS or planninmg permission will be an issue
