makes of timers to be fitted to the 13amp spur for storage heaters

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

I have moved into a house that has 2 storage heaters fitted. 1 is a 1.2 kw the other is a 1.8kw I have economy 7 meter installed. I have been told I now will require timers to be fitted to the 13amp spur could you recommend any makes. many thanks. steve. --- ATT Bright sparks. Could the problem be that the consumer unit is a split consumers unit and one side is energized after midnight? kind regards. steve.

If you have an active E7 tariff, then there should be one or more circuits that automatically switch on overnight (between midnight'ish and 07:00 ish), and will conversely be dead at all other times. The storage heaters should be connected to a supply that's switched-on overnight. Therefore, I would have thought the use of additional timers would be unnecessary. Or am I missing something? Later response to: "ATT Bright sparks. Could the problem be that the consumer unit is a split consumers unit and one side is energized after midnight? kind regards. steve." Hi Steve, It's certainly possible you may have what's called a "dual-tariff" consumer unit, in which one part provides 24hour supply to most of the circuits in the house (lights, sockets) and a separate part - energised from the Economy7 meter - provides the overnight power to storage heaters and (maybe) immersion heater. You'd need to check and see if you have two pairs of meter tails (the thick cables from the meter) going into the consumer unit (CU). If there are, then the chances are you have a dual-tariff CU. More commonly, separate CUs are used for the two supplies and you'd see just one pair of meter tails going into each CU. Now I'm not sure what your problem is: Are you saying the storage heaters aren't working at all? If that's the case, there could be a couple of explanations: 1) you don't have an Economy 7 tariff agreement with your supplier, so the meter isn't switching to E7 overnight, or... 2) someone has modified the supply and removed the feed to the E7 side of the CU, or... 3) The E7 side of the CU might be switched-off at its main switch? The main switch could be either an RCD or a double-pole isolating switch in the CU. Hope that helps.

Not sure why you would need timers as the storage heaters should be connected to either an additional fuseboard or a duel tafriif supply (As previously stated.) If the storage heaters are just connected to one of fuseboard via the existing ring mains then you will need timers to each storage heater to correspond with the existing Economy 7.There are a few different makes, Smith, Sangamo, Also If the storage heaters are fed with radials to each, then you could add an additonal fuseboard and connect that to Economy 7.
