Damp Proofing

damp smell getting worse (14 inch thick walls built in 1700's)

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.11 PM

We have a wicked smell ....no. a stench in our hall. The walls are 14 inch thick built in the 1700's. And plaster boarded with DOB and dab. There are areas of damp on the plasterboard. Up. high near the ceiling......and the damp is now showing on the other side of the wall which is not boarded. Every time it rains the areas enlarge. s lighty and the smell increases. One patch of damp is on a wall built of new white blocks. We have been told its salts. As for the roof .........we have had various companies checking out, nothing found. The loft is fine ...timbers OK all bone dry. Also had all the guttering replaced....which made no difference. Could this smell be from a rot .....?????? wet or dry.is. that possible. Either in the brickwork or plasterboard. In a couple of weeks we have specialist coming. But am worried as smell is getting stronger..... Thanks for looking.

Hi There You are doing the right thing, a specialist will tell you what is happening they will probably have to take off some plasterboard to make sure there are no timber in the the wall which have dry rot which is a serious matter as it can eat into the brick mortar good luck. Regards Joseph
