Just because you have an old style fusebox does not necessarily mean that the wiring is unsafe! However there could be hidden defects and as such it is advisable to get a thorough electrical test and inspection carried out. This will detail what issues exist and what is required in order to make either the current wiring safe or what needs to be rewired etc.

it is recommended that all electrical installations be tested after 10years life span is considered 25 years ?
you need a EICR inspection carried out to you that means a Electrical Installation condition report !!
this would be completed only by a approved contractor to a governing body of the likes of the NICEIC ect if requested by insurers but i would advise this root?
they must set limitations as this property is to old to not carry out full tests otherwise it would be a waste of time? some electricians quite often put in limitations to get out of work so this is important

My advise would be to have a Electrical Test on your property before taking out any work ie changing consumer unit ect.
