How do I know my plumbing is water tight?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.11 PM

I just bought an old house, which needs a lot of work doing inside. The bathroom and kitchen appear to be in a very good condition but I'm not not sure about the plumbing. The taps/shower work, but I'm afraid to flush the toilet in case it leaks all over the place and causes major water damage. How can I check the plumbing is good without damaging the property? How do I know the toilet is safe to flush? Thanks.

Flush the toilet . And check where you think the waste water is going out.

Make sure area around toliet and pan connector is dry, then put blue roll underneath and wipe around the areas and flush. If even the slightest leak it will show on the roll. The best way of checking if you have leaks is using your appliances and keeping an eye out.

You'll need to flush to check but before you do it would be a good idea to check that the waste pipe (110mm in diameter roughly 4") is firmly stuck into the toilet pan, put down some old towels & flush, to check for minor leaks dry the floor behind the toilet thoroughly then put down some blue paper towels underneath the waste pipe (described above) & the water supply (either copper pipe or flexible hose going into the toilet cistern) if there are any leaks it will be quite evident on the blue paper towels. As for the rest of the house it would be a good idea to call a plumber to do soundness checks especially if it is an old property. Kind regards Mike

Even if you flush the toilet and it leaks worst case scenario you'll get a wet floor..... It won't be enough to cause considerable damage. I've had waste pipes completely come loose and the water discharged after flushing a few times, most bathrooms are Lino so just keep a mop and some towels at hand just in case. If you still worried then hire a plumber to check it all over for you. Gary T&M Plumbing and Heating

Flush the toilet and put a couple towels behind it , the worse case it will go onto the towels and not all over the bathroom.

Firstly I would look in the toilet and see if there is any water sitting in the base this should give you an idea if the toilet is water tight or not. Then it would be worth lifting the top of the Cystern and again look to see if there is water inside ? If so I would look further if not the toilet has been isolated and you will know you have a leak. I would then look around the rear of the toilet the waste pipe area if it’s not enclosed in and I would look for signs of leaking around the joints on the waste and then on the floor. Depending on the type of floor you should see signs of leakage should there be any. If you can’t see any visible signs of leaking and if possible you maybe able to slide a washing up bowl under the waste of the toilet and pack it out with some old towels and give it a light flush or just tip a couple of pints of water down the toilet this will be enough to see if you have a leak. Failing that call a plumber for some advice or a home visit to check it over for you.

If you want to know if it’s leaking then get a bowl or jug of water and slowly pour it down the toilet. Saves 3-6L going everywhere. Easiest way, try putting some blue roll down too to see if it drips. Also if you want to see if the property is water tight keep an eye on your water meter to see if it goes up before and after work if no body is gone during the day

Easiest way is to put some paper towels down and pour a bucket of water down while watching the paper towels for signs of a leak have a good feel around the inlet water and pan connector that takes the waste away.

Your best option is to prepare some blue roll around the toilet if you are concerned it may leak and then flush. If there is a leak the amount of water will not be enough to cause any significant amount of damage.

Flush the toilet but put some towels around the waste pipe, once it’s flushed you can remove the towel and check for any wet patches on the towel, you will then know if it’s water tight.

The only way your going to be able to find out if there is a chance of a leak occurring is to flush the toilet, if you place a towel, toilet roll or anything else that soaks up water under the pan connector behind the toilet and give it flush no where near enough water would come out to cause major damage and I’m doing this you will know weather it’s leaking or not, if it is leaking this won’t be a major problem to fix so calling up a plumber to come and find a solution will be easy and cheap. The best way to find out is by flushing it make sure if you are worried about it leaking that you surround underneath the toilet with towels to prevent damage if a leak does occur.

I would recommend a thorough visual inspection of all waste pipework and toilet connections, as said above put measures in place incase any water does leak, and flush the toilet to find out if there's any issues.
