satinwood going yellow after painting over varnish

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.11 PM

My hallway was darkly varnished and I had someone to return it to white using satinwood as a finish. Although it was sanded and primed now the paintwork is turning yellow. Could you advise how this should be remedied?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

When you have a stain surface the oils from the stain or varnish come through gloss u/coat satinwood etc to cause yellowing to prevent this happening a good stain block should be applied before u/coating or top coating this will prevent oils yellowing the painted surface hope this helps pAUL excel

Is the satinwood turning yellow because of something bleeding through or because of the oil based paint and was it an ordinary traditional wood primer? You need shellac based BIN primer which is recommended from the technical sheet for varnish/wood stain surfaces. A lot of oil based paints now contain more resin and less solvent due to environmental reasons which yellow more quickly, so if that's the case why not consider a water based satinwood finish which won't yellow so easily, rub down well first though because you are introducing a water based system over oil based.
