Do i need to clear out the insulation in my bathroom?

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.34 PM

Hi I called in British Gas for a faulty spot light under the cover that i have them. When they arrived, they noticed that i have insulation in the ceiling and that my spot lights are not fireguarded. Under new regulations for home insurance, they told me i need to clear out my insulation by using a wire hanger, and buy fire guarded spot lights. Was the advice I was given correct, as they did not rectify the job that i had called them for, and instead said this instead and have left my bulbs hanging loosely down from the ceiling for safety? Some verification please. Many thanks

Yes, open backed non-fire rated spotlights are lethal and cause numerous house fires. When they are installed in close proximity to thermal insulation material its worse, so best advise is to get them replaced asap for fire rated ones and get insulation moved away from the areas around the lights. Better still fit cooler running LED type lamps.

That is correct. Fire protection is required over spot lights in the bathroom. Option 1 install fire hoods over the spot lights. Option 2 Install fire rated spot lights. Kind regards, Anthony

yes that correct you have to use fire stop spot lights but when you use fire stop spot lights. And is the best if you can use the LED bulbs because they are not heat up like a normal halogen spot bulbs and best energie and money saving.
