Getting rid of cigarette smell in house

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.11 PM

Hi, we bought a house 6 months ago and its in a very poor condition. It had not been touched in 50 years(same kitchen, wallpaper, bathroom...) and the lady living there smoked 60 a day. The wallpaper has been stripped, ceilings washed(but still brown) and the windows left open all the time. Wooden floors have been washed numerous times. The place still stinks 6 months after moving in. Any suggestions for fixing the smell? We are wondering if ripping down the ceiling plasterboards, then replastering walls and ceiling is the answer... The house is a wreck anyway so the mess created isn't an issue. Any ideas?

Apply a quality primer and repaint the walls and ceiling. Sure smell will disappear.

I've experienced this before, I don't know what you washed with but I suggest something like Mr Muscle & give it another good scrub & rinse off as much as you can. Then apply an oil based undercoat to seal the ceiling & walls followed by your chosen colours or wallpaper. Should keep you busy for the next few weeks/months, Enjoy! Or take up smoking a pipe to counteract the cigarette smells!
