Wallpapering around alcove shelving
Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.34 PM
In my Victorian property I have fixed, immovable shelves in two alcoves either side of the chimney breast that I need to wallpaper around with patterned paper (I'm just papering the alcoves, not the chimney breast). How do I paper behind/around the shelves to keep the pattern matching?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If I understand correctly I think you should have just fitted the shelves loosely then hung the wallpaper & made little holes with a pencil or similar where the holes are. So if impossible to remove shelves you will struggle to match up patterned paper.
However there might be a solution but difficult to suggest without seeing the area/paper. For hanging paper you always need a plumbline but with shelves in situ this might prove difficult but you could consider investing in a self-levelling laser. You could place a few feet away in front of the shelves & this may allow you to hang paper up to the vertical laser line in between the shelves.
Or change paper so that it doesn't have a pattern that you have to match, ie just a random pattern.
Best o luck Paul

In my opinion you you'd need to take all the shelving down then insert the screws back
In to there holes then you can offer up the wallpaper and get a nice clean pattern match! use very sharp knife to cut through the screw holes.
Personally i can't see how you can hang the wallpaper up then cut around shelves
Good luck Billy
