Newly painted render - looks bad on parts where plasterer had to fill cracks

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.11 PM

Hi all, We had the front of our house re-rendered about six months ago due to damp and because of a few cracks in the render the plasterer hacked off around the crack and rendered over these bits again. That all seems fine but we've just had the house painted and the parts where the plasterer replaced the render stand out, I guess because they were done again and were a different mix??? It's not a big area but it's annoying because the rest of the house looks so good. I'm also worried that when we come to sell people will think there's a subsidence problem. Anything we can do about this?? To be fair to the plasterer he did day we might not get a good painted finish on the parts where he hacked out and did again but I was wondering if I sanded over those bits and repainted would that do the trick?? Thanks for any advice.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If the render is a smooth finish I would suggest repainting the whole wall using a textured masonry paint like Sandtex or Johnsons textured masonry paint. It has fine sand mixed into the paint and would make the appearance uniform.

HI When cracks are re-rendered, it's impossible to smooth with a float as would have been done with the original finish so it's always a coarse finish regardless of the render mix. If it's flat to the wall (as it should be) then a good sand-down with some 40 Grade paper followed by a good quality outside filler skimmed over the surface will do the trick. Once dry, sand down flat and re-paint but be warned - the surface can end up being smoother than the original render which will make it stand out again so a keen eye is called for! Hope this helps.
