Painted silk on top of silk/soft sheen - blisters!
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.52 PM
Help - have sanded down, cleaned and then painted a wall that had soft sheen or silk paint on - first coat blistered a little but second is really bad despite my leaving it for a week before repainting - what on earth is wrong, I used a Dulux Trade silk.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The trouble is with a silk painted wall nothing really can get through it, dry solid and it creates a barrier so when applying on top do not really harden also crazes open and crack and blister when I have come acrossed this problem I have seal walls with zinsser shellac base dry quick, and thin coating, strong smell wear a mask if using it.
then start your painting again its work for me ok. You will have to fine fill blisters first and rub down then apply sealer (BUT NOT PVA ) like starting from scatch if you feel this is not for you then a plaster skim over then should have no problems then mist coat first 50/50 in matt then two coats should be enough for finishing in colour required hope this helps.

Hi,
The problem that you face is adhesion, going over a high sheen product such as silk with another coat of silk can lead to blistering/bubbling of the surface. I would remove blisters and fill using a fine surface filler, then id use a bridging primer such as Dulux super grip or Zinseer bullseye, then repaint using desired colour and finish.
There could also be some residue left over by the cleaner you used? Difficult to answer 100% to be honest but that would be my way forward on rectifying your issues.
