Plumbing

Noisy pipes and juddering boiler

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.11 PM

I'm not sure if this question should fit in the plumbing or central heating section but any advice would be hugely appreciated.... Ever since I bought my house (2 1/2 years ago) there has been a loud 'bang' every time the toilet is flushed, often followed by a sort of grinding noise for a few seconds. It is usually worse if there is something running that uses hot water, like the shower, tap or washing machine. This may be unrelated but recently the boiler has started making a very loud juddering / banging noise if the hot water in the kitchen is running on a low flow. It stops if the tap is turned fully on. So my question is what would be causing these things, are they related and are they indicative of a serious problem? Who would I need to ask to get this sorted? A plumber? Boiler service? Or maybe both? Many thanks

Good evening, the shuddering pipes can be caused by pipes not being clipped or air in the pipes, often when water goes around the bend in pipes it can cause shuddering noises, the solution is a simple installation of a water hammer arrestor. the boiler noises can be caused by debris and blockages in the system, the noises are a sure sign of a fault, which can be caused by poor installations, insufficient water supply, the water inlet pipe may be of a too narrow diameter to accommodate the boiler requirements. Replacing this pipe will, in most cases, rectify the problem. Running a combi boiler at too high pressure will cause boiler noise. The system cold pressure should be around 1 bar. Working pressure should register between 1.5 and 2 bars. Kettling in a boiler can be because of a build up of lime scale on the heat exchanger plates. Although lime scale deposits can be reduced by inhibitor on the central heating side of the heat exchanger plates, the boiler side plates will need servicing by a qualified heating engineer. Pipe-work that has not been securely supported can also cause noises, also a shortage of water supply can cause noises.
