Combi boiler installed and shower pump taken out - electric or mixer shower?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.07 PM

Hi I have just had a combi boiler installed so had to take out shower pump, so now the shower is plumbed to the taps (under the bath) is this now a mixer shower or is that something different? It seems to get the water hot enough I have to turn it to full power I then lose pressure. To get a shower which is as good a my old pumped one what should I get. Please help. Thanks Frances

Hi Frances, The cheapest option is to turn the boilers water temperature dial up to maximum, this will in turn increase the power of the flame in the boiler and give you a bit more flow, then just try to get used to the new (much lower) pressure at your shower, heres a brief explanation as to why its happening, A combination boiler supplies your hot water to the shower/taps from the incoming water main, it passes through the boiler and is heated directly using your gas supply, therefore the water will need to pass through a heat exchanger to achieve the desired temperature meaning..... the slower the water passes through the boiler the hotter it will become and vice versa, to give you more pressure the water will be passing through the boiler much quicker and in turn will be cooler hence the low water pressure at the shower head when you have a hot shower, unfortunately the only way you will receive as much pressure as before is to re-install the pumped shower system or opt for Electric, Electric showers work on a similar theory and are very good but to get one with sufficient water pressure when showering you will have to install a shower of over 8kw which will use a lot of electricity and require larger grade wiring which means it could cost a fair bit more to install, anything below 8 kilowatts isn't worth thinking about as the working water pressure isn't very good at all. hope this helps and my explanation was as understandable to you as i hoped it would be.
