Trench spoil as hardcore
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.11 PM
My builder seems to have used the spoil from the foundation trenches for the hardcore element of the concrete sub floor instead of type 1 MOT. The plans ask for sulphate free consolidated hardcore. Is this normal practice and will it satisfy building regulations? What are my options?

No, he should use hardcore, discuss with building control. Maybe worth considering early about hiring a new builder since this does not bode well.

Hi,
It may well be a case of experience for the builder, he may have vast experience to know what he is doing, and may well know that the material used from the excavated trench could well be used for a good backfill material when compacted, CBR tests can be achieved, ask him to get this done at his expense or he will have to remove it if it fails, he should have also offered you a saving as he doesn't have to import raw materials such as Type 1. Good luck with this, but in aideal world he should have stuck to design...
