Builders have finished laying concrete slab but no hardcore - is sub ground sufficient to lay slab onto?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.52 PM
My builders have just finished laying the concrete slab but no hardcore has ever been delivered to the site . My question is related to whether the sub ground would have been sufficient to lay the slab onto? Should I be speaking to the building inspector about this? --- Thanks for all help given I have now spoken with the builder. His response was that he used the spoil from the bottom of the trenches for the hardcore. Will this meet building regulations?

Hello
There should have been am inspection before the concrete was poured. This is imperative and one of the allocated stages that building control insist as they need to see that the base is consolidated and also that it has a sand blinding. I would speak to building control on the matter.
Hope that helps.

Hello,
Before a concrete slab is poured, the contractor needs to have the Structural Engineer’s technical advice in regards with the substrate, slab build up, materials to use, steel sizes/layout, connections, concrete to use (C35, C40 etc) if the slab will have something built on it.
The Structural Engeneer will need to know dimensions and what will be built on top of the slab.
Regards
Cris

I work as a freelance clerk of works so firstly the spoil used as hardcore has no specification and will not be frost susceptible also if I had not seen it prior to being concreted I would instruct the builder to dig down the side of the concrete to expose the construction also check concrete delivery lines for quantity used and specifications
