Buying a new cooker with induction hob - do I need to upgrade the wiring (6mm to 10mm)?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.07 PM

Hi, my old freestanding double oven cooker with ceramic hob has bitten the dust and I am looking for a replacement. The existing wiring was installed by an electrician who used a 6mm cable. I am considering buying a similar cooker but with an induction hob, however, the man in the shop said I would have to upgrade to a 10mm cable. He wasn't referring to a particular model but said it was necessary for all cookers with induction hobs due to the initial surge of current. My question is, is this true? I would like a cooker with an induction hob and I'm prepared to pay more but if I have to also pay for a rewire as well as new pots and pans it will probably tip the balance against going for induction. Many thanks, Dave P Thanks very much for the prompt replies. I have now contacted a local electrician for advice. Thanks again, Dave P.

He is a shop assistant and not an electrician! Stating this generically without checking the KW rating of any particular modesl is not helpful. Whilst you could spend a few hundred pounds on a new cable and disrupt the kitchen floor and walls to install it, it would be far better to select the oven and hob and get a registered electrician to check the design current as it may well be that the 6mm cable can be retained.

Do some simple research on your chosen appliance. You can find installation manuals online now, it will tell you within if there are any notable exceptions to standard cable sizing taken from the power rating.
