We want to replace our slim 1960s radiators, for more efficient 'double' ones is this a straight forward job?
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.38 PM
We are planning to have the walls plastered and thought this would be a good time to replace them as the old one has to be removed anyway
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

yes the metal on your 60's radiator is likely to be thicker, therfore takes longer to heat up and does not conduct heat as well as the the newer ones

If you are having the walls plastered remove the radiators. If your buying new ones measure up the current radiators which you have and purchase the ones the same size this will save yourself repiping. You may need to change brackets and redrill them into the wall. Any morequestions just ask

Replacing the radiators wouldn't be a problem but without looking at the job it is hard to determine what to do with the pipe work. If it comes out of a wooden floor it is possible to lift the floor and move the pipe work. If it is a solid screed/concrete floor, you would have to break up the floor if you want the pipework to come straight up or you could bend the copper pipe to fit the radiators.
Hope this helps

Yes, this would be straight forward, all you need to do;
1. Drain down CH system and then remove radiators
2. Fit new Radiators
3. Pipe up to Radiators with Valves
4. Remove Radiators, leaving valves on pipe work
5. Turn off Radiator Valves
6 Re-fill Ch system
7. Remove Radiator Brackets off wall and leave screws in wall, so that you know where to refit Brackets
8. Plaster and decorate
9. Fit Radiator Brackets and then re-fit Radiators onto Brackets and Valves
10. Fill Radiator
