Position of U-Bend under kitchen sink

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.11 PM

I have just moved into a new flat. After a few days, I noticed a sewerage smell coming from the kitchen sink. I opened the cupboard and took a look at the plumbing underneath. Please see image below: http://s4.postimg.org/9fmhjeeu5/IMG_20141015_193402.jpg The grey pipe to the left drops straight into a drain. The pipe to the right is the outflow of the washing machine which is next to the sink. My question is this. Shouldn't the U-bend be between the drain and the sink to stop gases from entering back up through the sink? Is this plumbed in wrong? It seems common sense that the bend is in the wrong place. Am I missing something? Also the washing machine seems to fill up with water, I can only assume from when I rinse water down the sink.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, yes you are correct the trap has been installed the wrong way round. The washing machine waste hose should connect to the tee section and the elbow section should be connected to the grey pipe going to the drain. There also appears to be some water damage to the bottom of the unit so I'd check it's not leaking from somewhere. Alan
