Floor joist/boards movement around chimney breast
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.11 PM
I've recently moved house and whilst moving furniture in and out I've noticed the floor boards and I suspect the joists below move up and down a lot around the chimney breast when any weight is put on the floor - walking or furniture. I suspect as its an old house (circa 1930) there's been some movement somewhere and the joists are no longer sitting properly in the wall. Is this something to worry about immediately?

hi you should be fine, the chimney will go much further down and should be supported on bricks which this is how they supported the chimney in them days the floor joist are usuelly supported in the wall or by means of a stub wall maybe you have some rot in the joists or if their sat on a wall plate they might have ro in them get it checked out soon though to be on the safe side

Yes the plate or the joist ends have rotten away. Easy fix with new sections of 4x2" and probably a section of plate
