Sewer smell in kitchen when bathroom used, not vice versa

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.52 PM

I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice. I have lived at my property for 5 years now, and have never got to the bottom of my problem. Whenever I run the sink in the bathroom, or drain water out of the bath, there is a FOUL smell in the kitchen that seems to eminate from behind a washing machine. Both the kitchen and bathroom are on the ground floor and seperated by a toilet (and lobby area to comply with regs). When the toilet is flushed, there is no smell whatsoever, it's just the bathroom sink and bath. The shower in the bathroom is closest to the kitchen and yet that does not produce any smell in the kitchen either. When water is run in the kitchen, again no smells. The smell is that of a sewer/strong rotten eggs. What sort of things should I be checking? As a note, our bath also has incredibly slow drainage, we did have a plumber lower the exit pipe outside but it seems to have made NO difference! Basically, we got the plumber in to look into the smell and slow bath drainage and I honestly think he did not have a clue! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Edit: I have now cleaned the outside drain which has made no difference. I ran the cold tap in the bathroom and no smell, then the hot tap which produces the foul smell, so its only the hot tap that produces the stench! What could this be?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

it may be that there is no trap on your washing machine outflow allowing the smell to come back up through your washing machine outlet pipe . I would certainly check that out
