Tiled patio at the same height as the house?

Every magazine I see shows pictures of houses where the patio and inside floor are flush with a drain down the middle, so the floor levels are the same inside and out. I'm now told that the damp proof course has to be higher than the patio and therefore there has to be a step down from inside to outside. I want to avoid decking and have porcelain tiles which are suitable for both interior and exterior. Does anyone have any experience in this? Help please.

you can lay porcelain tiles up to cill level but must put 50-100mm wide french drain,which is basically leave a gap and fill with shingle so you dont bridge damp

I would not recommend porcelain tiles outside.
As to the height you should be 150mm below DPC but people do have patios at the same level as internal floors. You have to ensure you have the correct vertical DPM installed and drainage. Plus you will need to ensure the patio slopes away from the house.
This should only be installed by someone who knows what he is doing and you may still get damp problems from splashback. It does look nice but you have to be aware of the drawbacks.

patios should not be above the damp course , period ... porcelain tiles outside would be a health hazard , would advise not to use them.
