Kitchen wall looks mouldy and finished with concrete?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.10 PM

We have just moved into a Victorian terrace. The kitchen is in the old extension at the back of the house. Whilst we were cleaning we noticed the cupboards under the sink and the walls at the back are covered in black mould. In addition to this It seems that the wall is finished I a grey material (concrete?) we had planned to redo the kitchen later but now it has become a priority! Can we do anything about this ourselves? If not how long would it take to get someone in to do it? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi I would be surprised if this wall is concrete finished, unless it is part of an old exterior bunker in the past. It may well be old style grey sirapite plaster which drys dark grey and when damp or wet would give the impression of concrete. To be honest it may be a simple case of hacking off a small area with club hammer and bolster. This will at least give some indication of the substance on the wall. It could also be a very hard render coat that has been polished up and was used to stop damp penetration. Depending on size of room and how many walls are covered in this finish.
