Drilling into lintel to put in blind brackets

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

I have a Cordless JCB Combi Drill CD20li (20 volt). With the correct drill bit (HSS) should i be able to drill into a lintel above a household window frame to put in some blind brackets ? I am aware I would need to change the drill bit as I move from the masonry to the lintel.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Mark, An HSS drill bit is for drilling steel or similar materials. It is an SDS drill bit you need to be using with the drill set on hammer action this will get you through both the masonry & the lintel. Unless steel is present then you will require the HSS bit. Only if your battery drill is powerful enough for this ! 5.5mm2 drill bit for red plugs 7mm2 drill bit for brown plugs Good luck!!

A good quality HSS bit will get you through eventually, how fast will depend on the power and speed of your drill but you should get there eventually. An sds drill would get through quicker but for a one off I'd persevere with a standard, not sure if S H Electrical is suggesting using an sds bit in your drill or not, but I wouldn't recommend it, it won't have any benefit, SDS bits are purely for SDS drills not standard hammer drills.
