Bathroom Fitting

Height of bathroom floor - replacing wood with tiles

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.07 PM

I have a wooden floorboard bathroom floor, ive taken up the laminate that was on top and am replacing with new tiles (along with a complete bathroom renovation). I've been thinking a lot about the floor height (I dont want an obvious step up into the bathroom - I dont mind a few mil). Looking at the advice, I would need to remove the floorboards and lay marine ply 18mm to create a new floor. Then over that put down backer board (6mm) onto which can then be tiled. Added complication of underfloor heating matt to lay too. Could I use a specific ufh indulation board that is a bit thinner instead of normal backer board (I.e hardiebacker) to go down on the ply? Also, is it possible to leave the flooring under the bath as it is? Would I have to replace the whole lot in one go? Or could I for instance do most of it (up to ply level) and then leave the area under the toilet until I'm ready to replace the toilet? Even if I went for no ufh would I still need to replace boards with ply? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

If U have ply U don't need the backer board. But U need ether 1" ply or plenty of support ie; bridging especially where boards meet, also thin insulation, I have seen the ufh work ok without insulation also.Under the toilet can be done separately, but it is easy to remove & replace a toilet normally. under bath is optional. Of course no ufh under units. If U use hardiebacker board U don't need to replace the floor boards provided they are sound & well fixed down.

What i tend to do and have never had any comebacks is :- 1. Replace floorboards with 18mm ply screw down every 200mm 2. Use a Dural Tile Matting fixed with a wooden flexible adhesive ,this waterproofs the floor area ideal for wet-rooms and helps for a good bond for the tiles to fix. 3. Tile and grout as usual with flexible adhesives and grouts.
