removing insulation from loft in 1930s house: asbestos risk?

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

Hi 1930s large (180sqm) detached house. I need to remove and replace the old insulation in the loft. I think the insulation itself is fine, but is it possible that the ceiling boards are made of asbestos? I.e. there is a ton of dust... Could it be dangerous? Obviously I don't intend to break the ceiling but I'm worried the dust has come off then. Can I tell if it's fibreglass board or something more dangerous? Thanks

Hi, there is a chance that older ceiling sheets are made from asbestos, best advice is to clear the old insulation using mask and gloves, then dispose of, finish by vacuuming the dust and dispose of in a sealed bag, Leave the loft alone for 24 hours at least before insulating to allow time for any small amounts of residual dust to settle.

Would need more information, if it looks like a cement sheet or Artex then there is defiantly a risk if disturbed. If in doubt get a surveyor to inspect and advise.
