13a electric sockets in bedroom have no switches - tenant has been told they are illegal

Hi I have a tenant in my flat who tells me that the sockets down by her bed have no switches and has been told that they are illegal ?? i have never heard of this apart from cooker switches etc could someone please confirm this for me as i need to put it right if they are incorrect Many thanks Graham

Hello Graham. Un-switched sockets are not illegal and are used for powering appliances that should not be switched off externally like Fridge/freezers and so on. If the sockets are low down and if your tenant has small children then I would recommend swapping them for switched anyway as some small children like poking things in the terminals. Nothing illegal about these sockets. I would agree that for a rental property that its not ideal and that they should be replaced with a switched socket as its easier to use, but definitely not illegal!
