Turning a conservatory into full extension - do you need planning permission?
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.50 PM
Hi, When we had our kitchen extended, we also had a conservatory done, I want to now turn that into a proper extension. Would I need planning permission to do this? It's 4x4m with a polycarbonate roof, I believe the foundations are already 1m deep as the builder did it the same as the kitchen extension. Would need the wall building on 1 side and a full roof putting in with velux window's. The conservatory is only about 5/6 years old. Thanks.

you would need panning as planning states certain rules one of which is you can go out up to 3m without planning and seeing as yours is 4m you would defo need planning, as well as this building control will want to see your foundations and you would also need to break out your floor slab (interior concrete floor) as building control will want to make sure that this is adequate structure for the extension

Lots of issues here, was the extension built with planning and when ? and if so did the council make it a condition to remove permitted development rights ? Was the conservatory included in the planning or just done as an extra ?. Is the house detached or semi / terr ? ......
With regards conversion, there are ways to convert to all year round use, without the need to build new walls or add undue weight irrespective of the current foundations.
Need a lot more information...but be careful going for planning until you understand what was already agreed
