Could rain come through air brick and cause damp on internal wall?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.06 PM

- On the internal wall there are a wet patch on the wall . The floor around it is also a bit damp. On the outside, very close to the wet inside area, is an air brick.the air brick is not covered from rain. Could rain come through the air brick and cause the wet and damp on the inside? Thanks. Michael M.

If the brick is old and impaired coverage the rain can come through and damp it on the inside.

This often happens when air brick is on ground level and the floor area gets flooded water will pour through holes in air brick, you need to raise air brick to stop water flowing in.

Most likely, the interior of the air vent has been set in plaster, not render. Plaster is hygroscopic and will absorb moisture from the air, especially when the temperature drops and coincidentally but not related to, when it’s raining . It’s really confusing until one understands hygroscopic dampness. Most contractors even damp proofers know about this .
