Electric power shower isn't working after immersion fuse switched off

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.06 PM

Hi, we had an issue whereby our hot water from the taps was close to boiling so we called out a boiler 'expert'. Turns out our immersion has been on for quite some time and he simply switched the fuse off. The problem is, the water has returned to a decent temp, but now the electric power shower isn't working. It's obviously on the same fuse as the immersion. Any ideas? I'm really not technical so go easy on me.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

There should be an isolator by the immersion heater if you switch off from there then you can turn the mcb back on and your power shower should come back on. ideally they should be run on separate supply's but at the very least you should label the mcb to show what it serves.

Clearly someone has bodged the shower installation in the past hence why the immersion needs to be left on all the time so that the shower will work! You need to contact a Part P registered electrician and preferably get the shower circuit rewired or at least re-routed so that it can be used independently. The current arrangement is not compliant with BS7671:2008 wiring regulations. You may also find that you need an RCD fitted to bring the wiring up to date and make it safe.

You may have more than one problem to solve here. Sounds to me like your boiler doesn't have a thermostat to control the max heat and that your power shower (not electric shower or shower pump) and immersion heater are wired from the same fused connection unit. Is your cylinder in a cupboard adjacent to or in your bathroom hence the convenient power source for your power shower? Hire an electrician to inspect, test and correct a fairly straightforward situation if I've pictured your set up correctly.
