Damp Proofing

Why is the humidity in our single brick victorian house so high?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.52 PM

Hi, I have a 2 bed flat which is on the ground floor of a detached victorian house which has single brick construction. Our humidity levels are regularly over 70%, a constant musty smell if the windows are not open and have had mould on some of the external walls. The master bedroom has an en-suite and we have another bathroom (but only use one of them). We do dry clothes in the flat but this is max 3 loads a week. we have a really good dessicant dehumidifier which helps to reduce humidiy when running. What I can't understand is why our humidity levels are so persistently high? I've checked for rising damp but the walls are all dry even when it rains, the window seals look ok. I've been told we dont generate any more humudity than a normal house hold. the master bedroom has 1 external wall and the 2nd bedroom has 3 external walls, which are all very cold. We are considering getting thermal wall paper but it feels like a shot in the dark if we can't identify where the humudity is coming from? any ideas?

The key to lowering humidity levels is with good ventilation. These problems are solved for good with the installation of Positive Input Ventilation and good extractor fans from the kitchen and bathroom. A tumble dryer will help reduce the humidity also. The cold walls are acting as a magnet for the humidity and it is condesing, which then turns into mould. We have long-term solutions for exactly this kind of problem. A local EnviroVent surveyor will come and check your property for free. I hope this helps. Martin Hicks - EnviroVent Oxfordshire

Its a solid brick building built with lime mortar, if its been re-pointed,rendered, with cement ,or painted on the external walls this will hold in water, stopping the building breathing. Good luck alex
