My consumer unit has no "spare" breakers but need to get power into lean to extension

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

Hi, I have recently built a single storey lean to extension. The work falls under permitted development and is classed as a temporary structure (covered walk way).. We want to have some plug sockets and lighting in the new extension and are looking for the advice on the best way to archive this. Our house was fully re-wired in 2010 and a new consumer unit was installed under the stairs. The issue is, the CU has no spare breakers but I have read on here that a small additional 1 or 2 way RCD type unit can be added adjacent to the main consumer unit quite easily. Is this the best option? I have bought a garage consumer unit (2 way) Thanks in advance

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

What you are suggesting would be fine, although personally, replacing the existing consumer unit with a larger one with spare ways would be the best way to go in my opinion, obviously this would be at a higher cost than installing a separate, smaller unit Split the supply tails into a henley block to supply a separate, smaller consumer unit to allow for any additions Kind regards Matt

If you only require a couple of sockets and a light fitting then the easiest route might be to extend from the existing circuits. Call in a registered electrician for a free quote and take his advise.
