Is it OK to use matt emulsion in a bathroom

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

I have just had my bathroom re-decorated but the decorators have used matt emulsion on the walls and eggshell on the ceiling. Is this OK/suitable? Or do I need to ask them to come back to re-paint it all in special bathroom paint? Thanks in advance for your time.

It's very important to assess the level of condensation having in your bathroom, as this will affect the type of job to do. If your bathroom is well ventilated, any type of a good quality paint vinyl with silk or satin finish will be enough, always with a good preparation of the surface, removing old coats of paint and then washing the surfaces with sugar soap. Silky/satin emulsion paints offers a washable good option for bathrooms. Eggshell or special paint for bathrooms are anti damp/mould and offer a better solution.

Hi, it would be advisable to check whether your decorators used a 'vinyl' matt emulsion as this has reasonably good wear but if they've used a contract matt then by all means fetch them back to re coat in an appropriate product. Personally I like the added protection of eggshell on walls and ceilings, a good quality acrylic eggshell will not look to 'shiny' it will be very washable and water/condensation resilient.
