Fitting New Light in Kitchen but No Earth Wire?

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

We've just bought a new metal light fitting to replace the old fluorescent in our Kitchen. On trying to fit it though we discovered that the original fitting has no earth cable running from the ceiling? We had the house rewired about 6 years ago, and earths run through all lights, switched and sockets, so unsure why this has been missed. There is an earth in the light switch, but nothing coming from the ceiling? Can i remedy this myself, or will I have to get an electrician out just to run some cable?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would advise using a registered electrician to sort this out for you. It is an easy job(cable run permitting)but it is critical for consumer safety. and you will not have the access to test equipment required to ensure it has been done correctly.

The section of cable to the kitchen light should be rewired asap, as the lack of an earth on a class 1 metal light fitting is a serious electric shock issue.

This need to be put right asap. Shouldn't really cost much. Would not recommend for you to do it . Get it done by a registered electrician.

it looks like the earth is there and not stripped back and wasnt connected to the fitting if it was re-wired 6 years ago cant see it being wired with out an earth unless its wired in single cable not twin and earth
