Should plastering go right down to the floor?
Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.33 PM
Hi, My plasterer has not plastered right down to the floor, leaving a jagged, rather than straight, edge. I mentioned this to him and he said it is because we will be laying a new floor and attaching skirting. Is this right? If so, should he have not at least made sure he finished it off neatly, and straight? Thanks!

Sounds as if you plasterer is right. Plastering down to the floor can cause damp issues.
It does not need to be straight as along as it is below skirting board level.
If though you are not fitting skirting boards the plasterer should have been made aware of this before he started.

Hi It is not normal to plaster down to the floor, on ground floors this can make it possible for damp to bypass your damp proof course and it is also likely to cause the plaster to curve out at the very bottom which would make your skirting boards hold off the wall at the top. I normally just run a water brush across it to keep it flat but it sounds as though your plasterer hasn't done anything different to any other.
If you are skirting the room it should not cause you any issues.
