Bathroom re-fit - large chunk of cost up front
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.06 PM
I am having a bathroom re-fit and have been quoted £6000.00 for the job excluding the tiles. The job will take approx 4 days to complete. The plumber has asked for £1000.00 deposit (which i have paid already by cheque), he is now asking for a further £3500.00 before the work is started, and to leave the remainder £1500.00 to be payable upon completion. When dealing with tradesmen in the past, i have normally paid a deposit and then the balance on completion. Is this the norm now to ask for a large chunk of the cost up front?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Never pay for work upfront. If you are unhappy with the end result then you can withhold payment until the issue is resolved. Otherwise they could do a rubbish job and then disappear. Personally i would have alarm bells ringing and question his ability and reason for asking for a big sum upfront. Good tradesman all have 30 day trade accounts with the merchants, so can order their supplies, do the job, get paid and then settle their account. Sounds like he doesn't have a trade account, so i would question why this is.
Hope this helps and good luck with it

you are quite right, my normal is a deposit then the remainder on completion regardless of any extra work or materials required to complete the job, with the remainder paid on completion, this tradesman knew the cost of the job,it has not changed so why should his terms, would definitely be sticking to my guns and saying no, you took on the job, a deposit was paid, the remainder will be paid on completion.
good luck Alex
