What is my 45 amp fused switch likely to be operating??

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

Hi. I have a feed off of my main fuse box to a 45amp fused switch. My problem is I've no idea what this operates. I've turned it off and still can't see what's not operating. I used to have an electric shower but it was removed a few years ago (by bathroom fitters). If it was for this I would have expected the switch to be disconnected, or at least turned off! My worry is that I have a live wire floating behind a wall! If it wasn't for the shower, any idea what it may have been for, before I disconnect something important, or start making holes in walls looking for a wire? Update.... Tried leaving it off. Have sussed out ( thanks to my teen daughters moaning) that it's been re-allocated from the shower to the air-pump jacuzzi thing on the bath. (Don't ask. Seemed like a good idea at the time....). It's still on the 45amp breaker, but with a 13 amp fused rcd further on before the pump. So... The question becomes .. Is this ok. A 45 amp circuit seems a bit hefty, but will the 13 amp rcd alleviate that?? If I actually trusted the fitters I'd be more confident but these nuggets fitted a toilet under a 4' combed ceiling. Rocket scientists obviously. :-/

You used to have an electric shower this would have had a supply and if there is no other sign of the supply for your electric shower then this is/was probably it. If there is any doubt shut off the supply for a good period and see if it has any effect on anything else. If it does not you can feel secure in having the supply disconnected from the consumer unit by a registered electrician. Depends on if its done right so would not like to say without a visual inspection. I would prefer to Reduce the MCB rating tom 16A.

Simple "Bathroom Fitters" are not electricians so they have done as little as possible when removing the shower and left the old 45amp isolator switch in place. Next your be saying that they never issued you with an electrical certificate for the work they didn't do properly!
