Grease-laden cooker hood/fan: Do electricians advise/remove grease from ducting?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.51 PM
We're hoping to replace our old cooker hood, which (despite constant filter cleaning) is leaking grease. We clean the filter often; and exterior of the fan beneath the hood. So the problem seems deeper: the fan's internal mechanisms, the wall behind, and part of ducting is probably also grease-laden. Which is probably potentially dangerous. So would it be best that whoever fits the fan first expertly removes/cleans any grease lining the wall and ducting (the part of the ducting accessible, that is)? Or advises us how to do it safely? If so, wouldn't it be a several-step process? 1) Remove existing cooker hood/fan; 2) clean grease from ducting and wall behind; 3) install new cooker hood/fan. We're guessing that electricians wouldn't want to advise on grease issues, or clean grease from ducting... Is that correct? So should we be looking instead for a qualified electrician who is ALSO a handyman, and willing to advise or do both things? REVISION: -Response so far suggests to also replace ducting with new. What kind of tradesman knows how to do that (if not an eletrician)? -What kind of tradesman can remove actual fan unit (we cannot)? -Is removing grease from ducting a specialised skill requiring long-reach instruments, or is that something we can do? (Once an expert has removed the unit). Thanks!
