horizontal distance between eye level grill and combi boiler (Worcester bosch 30c)

Our old combi (20Years Sime Halstead) packed in and we have have several gas fitters look at the setup, gas cooker with eye level grill on the left and combi boiler on the right with the bottom of the boiler level with the eye level grill inlet gas pipe 15mm. The general consensus was that we would need 22mm gas pipe for the supply, but nobody mentioned that we needed a 150mm distance between the eye level grill and the boiler (the distance at the present is about 50mm). The fitter arrived and said that he couldn't put the new boiler in with the cooker where it was and his solution was to buy a new cooker without an eye level grill because changing the location of the boiler would be more costly. The new compact boiler is narrower than the old boiler and the gap would be about 80mm. Is the fitter correct and is there any other solution?
