Painting front door (chemical bath, sanded, undercoat)

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.09 PM

I had the 1930 s front door stripped in a chemical bath. I waited a week and I then sanded and filled holes and put an undercoat down. 1. Should i have cleaned door to neutralise it prior to painting 2. should i have put wood primer down first 3. Have i messed up the door 4. Would another layer of undercoat help before i add the final top coat of paint or do i put wood primer on retrospectively 5. Can i add more filler to cover cracks and knots The current undercoat is a very thin layer

Hi, you should have used primer first however it is not the end of the world! I would advise you to seal the knots with 'knotting ' (shellac) then apply two very thin coats of undercoat before you apply the finish coat. The door should be fine after this but remember to rub down between coats. Hope this helps
