Earth bonding of radiators
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.09 PM
Doing a bungalow renovation and starting first fit in some rooms having stripped out old, will I need to run in earth bonding cables to each radiator or can I earth bond on central heating pipework which will be in copper in the loft space ? Also I am confused on cable sizes 10mm for water and gas main, 6 or 4 mm for all other areas. Have read different and conflicting information. Can you help please ?

Under the current 17th Edition wiring regulations introduced in 2008, provided that all electrical circuits are RCD protected then the only earth bonding that is required is one 10mm cable to the gas and one 10mm cable to the water. All other bonding can therefore be ignored as its no longer required.
If you are installing these cables yourself, then you must apply and pay for Part P building regulation consent (approx £300) otherwise the wiring you install will be considered to be illegal as it will have not been registered with building control.

This work is required to be done by a registered electrician or through building control.
If meeting certain requirements too complicated for me to go through supplementary bondings are not required. My recommendation is you contact a registered electrician and employ his services to install your installation or to inspect and certificate your works for you (conditions to be agreed prior to works commencing)
