Plastering & Rendering

Part rendered front of house

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.05 PM

My father had a problem with render cracking at the front of his house, the loose render was removed and replaced. However, after a few weeks it has stared to crack and if you tap certain areas it sounds hollow. Should the builder have removed all the old plastered and re rendered the whole of the front of the house? The builder has offered to re do the job but I am concerned that my father will be ripped off again.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes any loose existing plaster should have been removed as the new render is getting applied to loose existing render which in time will move with the weight and crack. Cracking normally happens when 1. Loose existing materials 2. Painted walls 3. Any loose bricks has not been tied in and meshed 4. Render over timber, as wood is a high conductor it draws the water out the plaster to quick which results in cracking.
